Religious feast day of Virgen de la Candelaria (Our Lady of Candelaria), patron saint of the Canary Islands. Candelaria, Tenerife : pilgrimage (romeria) to Basilica de la Candelaria (dates to 15th century, houses dark-skinned Virgin statue—Virgen Morena). Thousands of pilgrims walk days to arrive by Feb 2, dress in traditional Canarian costumes (traje típico canario—white shirt, dark trousers, colored waistcoat, felt hat, wood cane for men; white blouse, embroidered skirt, lace headscarf for women). "Ofrenda de Flores" (flower offering) to Virgin; "Bajada de la Virgen" (descent of Virgin statue from basilica for procession) every 7 years (next 2029). Nationalwide : blessing of candles (candelas) at churches—candles brought to mass to be blessed for protection against storms and lightning (traditional belief). Also: "La Purificación de la Virgen" (Purification of the Virgin) 40 days after Christmas (Feb 2, 40 days after Dec 25). Bearers of candle (candelero) tradition: oldest male family member holds blessed candle during family dinner. Also: tradition of removing Christmas decorations—Candelaria marks end of Christmas season (Nativity scenes taken down and stored until next Christmas)
