UNESCO World Heritage. Residents of Córdoba's historic center (San Basilio, Santa Marina, San Lorenzo districts) open their private patios (courtyards) to public for competition. Patios are Roman-style central courtyards (descended from Roman domus and Muslim riad), filled with potted plants (geraniums, carnations, jasmine, orange trees), whitewashed walls, central fountain or well, iron gates and tiles (azulejos). Competition : prizes for "Mejor Patio" (Best Patio) in categories (Modern, Classic, Old Town). Visiting : route map at tourist office (Torre de la Malmuerta); patios open 11am-2pm and 6pm-10pm (siesta closure 2-6pm). Buy "Pasaporte de Patios" (€15) for access to all 50+ patios; entry €5 per patio individually.
