The most famous street decoration competition in Barcelona. 15-20 streets compete each year; winners announced August 15 (opening night). Streets closed to traffic; themes range from underwater (previous winner: "Món submarí" with 15,000 recycled plastic bottles) to space (winner: "Univers" with handmade planets) to classic cinema (winner: "Cinema Paradiso" with 3D movie theater facade). Residents work year-round on recycled materials (plastic bottles, bottle caps, cardboard, fabric scraps, egg cartons for scales). Free concerts, children's activities, human towers (castells) on August 19 (Castells Day). Visit at night when streets are illuminated. No tickets required (free entry) but hotels book up—Gràcia district has limited hotels, stay elsewhere in Barcelona and take metro (L3 to Fontana or Lesseps, L4 to Joanic)
