📖 Full description

Summer solstice celebration (oldest pre-Christian festival in Spain, adapted by Catholic Church as St. John the Baptist's Eve). Beach bonfires (hogueras) lit at midnight; tradition: jump over fire 9 times to remove bad luck (los nueve saltos), or write wishes on paper and burn in fire. "Baño de medianoche" (midnight swim for good luck)—traditional saying: "Agua de San Juan quita veneno y no hace daño" ("San Juan's water removes poison and does no harm"). Alicante : "Hogueras de San Juan" (Fiesta of International Tourist Interest)—spectacular bonfire festival similar to Las Fallas but in summer. Gigantic monuments (hogueras) displayed on streets; "La Plantà" (setup) June 19-20; "La Cremà" June 24 at midnight burns all hogueras. Also: "Cabalgata del Ninot" (parade of figures) June 21; "Ofrenda de Flores" (flower offering) to Virgen del Remedio June 22-23. Coca de Sant Joan : traditional cake (sweet brioche filled with candied fruit and pine nuts, eaten with cava). Pro tips : bonfires on Barcelona's Barceloneta beach get crowded (arrive 9pm to secure spot on sand); restaurants offer "cena de San Juan" (special menu €30-60 per person)—book days in advance. In Valencia and Alicante, book hotel 6+ months ahead because fiesta coincides with peak summer solstice tourism
