Many businesses closed Dec 6 & Dec 8; most Spanish take Dec 7 off as "puente" (bridge) for 4-day weekend. Traditions: Día de la Constitución (Dec 6) - institutional events at Congress of Deputies in Madrid, flag-raising at Plaza de Colón; Inmaculada (Dec 8) - mass at Seville Cathedral (Virgen de los Reyes—patron saint of Seville, procession with giant silver throne), at Madrid's Almudena Cathedral, at Zaragoza's Basilica del Pilar. Also: Christmas lights switched on in major cities (Madrid's Calle de Serrano, Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia, Seville's Calle Sierpes)—usually late November but this long weekend is first major Christmas shopping weekend
